Gate Valve FAQ

Q: What is the difference between NRS and OS&Y gate valves?

A: Non-Rising Stem (NRS) valves have a stem that turns to open and close the gate. Outside Stem and Yoke (OS&Y) valves have a stem that moves into or out of the valve, which moves the gate to open or close.

Q: What kind of maintenance do gate valves require?

A: Under normal conditions, gate valves should be periodically flushed with clean water. Grit and dirt should also be removed from exterior moving parts to allow the fitting to operate as designed.
