Pierce Manufacturing, Appleton, WI

Kent Pauli, Platform Manager – Aerial Products

Pierce is the largest fire apparatus manufacturer in the United States and offers a wide range of fire, rescue, and special services vehicles. Over the past ten years, Akron Brass has worked closely with Pierce to develop new products that best meet their customers' needs.

"We use Akron products throughout our product line," says Kent Pauli, platform manager of aerial products at Pierce. "In fact, Akron Brass valves, monitors, and electrical components are standard components on many of our apparatus."

According to Pauli, the reason is simple. "What sets Akron apart has been its willingness to work with us to integrate its products into our vehicles" he notes. "Akron has pursued this diligently and has developed several new products to achieve our mutual goals."

One of the products is Akron's electric Tuckaway monitor that rotates up to 240 degrees in the vertical direction to stow the nozzle safely under an aerial ladder. Once deployed, the nozzle can flow up to 1,000 gpm and achieve a full range of horizontal and vertical movement. The Tuckaway monitor is standard on all Pierce Sky-Booms. Akron Brass incorporated the same technology into the StreamMaster electric monitors to help protect them when specified on aerial ladders. The StreamMaster is the standard monitor for all Pierce aerial ladders.

Pierce also uses Akron Brass monitors on its pumpers and finds that the compact design of many models is especially useful in situations where customers want a low-profile deck gun that can deliver high flow rates.

Other applications at Pierce include Akron Brass electric and manual valves on all its aerial and pumper products, as well as Akron Brass valves and swivel discharge outlets at the tip of the aerial products. Pierce also uses Akron electrical junction boxes at the tips of its aerials and installs Akron electric cord reels in the compartments of its rescues.

"Akron Brass has been a good partner with Pierce," says Pauli. "We have been able to offer many new and innovative products because of that partnership."
